１０日間に及ぶ千葉取材が終わった。
事の発端はお盆の頃ウルワツチャレンジでバリに行っていた時から始まる。
ウエイブチャートを見てもバリはそれほどパンプする気配もなく、
逆に日本にビッグ台風が来る事を知った。
慌てて帰国日を８／２０から８／１８に変更しての緊急帰国。
（ガルーダのトモコさん、あざっす！！）
台風のコースから言って、千葉／ショットガンへ向かう事にした。
８／１８の朝関空に着き、用事を片付け、８／１９の夜大阪をキックオフして、
８／２０の朝千葉に到着、まだタイフーンスエルは届いていなかった。
この日の午後成田に到着したコールクリステンセンをパタゴニアでピックアップし、
勝浦／松部にあるカクイ旅館にチェックインさせ明日に備えた。
昨夜の徹夜の運転で夜はクラッシュダウンしたおかげで８／２１の朝は目覚めが良かった。
そしてこの日から思ったよりも早くに台風からのスエルが入りだして来た。
昨日の夕方からビーチはクローズしはじめたらしいが、
いよいよ本格的なグランドスエルが勝浦湾に押し寄せ始めた。
風もなくスムースなコンディションなので、
まだチョットガン程度だがセッションがスタートされた。
ショットガンは勝浦湾のほぼ中央に位置し、中根と呼ばれる瀬でブレイクする波。
ディープウオーターからいきなり浅瀬にヒットして、
恐ろしい程めくれあがる日本屈指のビッグウエイブスポットと言える。
６フィートあたりからブレイクはしだすが、
やはり８〜１０フィートからショットガンたる所以の本物の姿を拝む事ができ、
本当のザデイは５年に一度とも言われ、滅多にその牙を剥き出す事がない。
今回の様な勢力の大きな台風に兼ねて、限りなく房総半島に近づく台風でないと、
ショットガンが覚醒することがないのだ。
この日の午前のセッションは潮が干きに入り、
ショットガン名物のダブルアップするピークが出だしたが、
まだまだスエルのプッシュがなく、午後の満ち込みに期待することにした。
ロングセッションで体は疲れていたが、
明日の予報は南西の風／オンショアになるというので、
ショットガンのパイオニアでもあるタコさんが、明日どうなるかもわからないし、
もう１ラウンドやるべ！の一言で、潮の乗り出して来た夕方セッションに突入した。
狙いは的中、サイズも倍増、潮があるのでダブルアップせず、スムースな波となり、
風も緩いオンショアながら、ビッグウエイブなのでむしろオフショアよりも
テイクオフしやすいコンディションとなった。
実は今回の台風でこの日の２ラウンド、
そしてビゲストデイとなった８／２３の午前の１ラウンド、
計３ラウンドの中でも、このファーストデイの夕方セッションが
一番ライダブルなセッションとなったのだ。
千葉独特の哀愁の夕方の陽が陰りだし、ジェットアシストをしてくれていた、
ナオト／オノゲ／シゲル等のジェットスキーで港にデリバリーされ、
本日２ラウンドやり切った事に超ストーク。
思ったよりもタイフーンスエルの到着が早く、
バリからの帰国日を早目、一日前に千葉入り出来て良かった〜と心底思った。
翌朝、スエルはグロウアップしていたが、予報通り朝から南西のオンショア〜
昨夜、伊豆から電車を乗り継いで千葉／勝浦入りしてきたマークヒーリーに会いに、
セットアップしておいた三日月ホテルへコールと共に訪ねた。
アメリカのアウトドアマガジンのシャークダイビングの取材で伊豆／下田にいたヒーリー。
昨日の夕方まで伊豆の海で鮫とダイビングしていたというが、
流石に台風の影響でこれ以上潜れないと言う事で、ダイビングの取材は終了し、
今度は大好きなビッグウエイブを求めて千葉／外房の海にやってきた。
しかし、今日は一日オンショアが止まず、明日は北東の風に振ると言うので、
あちこち車でクルーズしたり、午後は体を休め、明日に備える事にした。
そしていよいよビゲストデイとなった８／２３。
スエルのラインは太く、ごつく、昨日からは一変していた。
台風からの北東の風も強まりだし、いつもの荒々しいショットガンに変化してきた。
風が強まるのを懸念したタコさんは早目にパドルアウトしたので、
皆も後に続き、猛威をふるっているショットガンのピークを目指した。
沖に到着するとすでに数人のサーファーがラインアップしており、
中でもナカムラショウタのオーラが凄かった。
乗り込むというよりも、もうあのモンスターバレルを狙いに行っている姿勢が凄まじかった。
セットはイージー１０フィートオーバーで、ダブル／トリプルアップし、手が出せなかった。
世界屈指のビッグウエーバーであるはずのコールやヒーリーもセットには手が出ない程で、
ショットガンの難しさ、奥深さをわからされたセッションとなった。
朝二になると北東の風が強まり、ややサイド気味になりはじめ、
カレントも強く、ピークへピークへ持っていかれるようになり、
波もよれだしてきて、とにかくヘビーコンディションになってきたので、
退散を余儀なくされた。
岸に上がり、カクイに行くとコールやヒーリーが乗れなかった〜と落ち込んでいた。
ポジションが、セットが、ダブルアップが、風が、、、
色んなヘビーな要素から、この二人にとって屈辱のノーライドセッションとなったのだ。
カクイのレストランで、鯵の開きの朝定食を食いながら、
皆でショットガンを見つめ、色んな想いにふけっていた。
カクイは俺にとってサーフィンカメラマンとしてのスタート地点の様な所。
もう３５年も前、２０歳だった自分はサーフィンの写真を撮りたくて、
原付／パッソルに乗って、このカクイで住み込みをしながら一冬を過ごした。
おっかないけど優しいカクイのバアちゃんや、シンさん、奥さん、ワカナさんの元で、
大阪から出て来た何もわからなかった小僧が、
ただがむしゃらにニコノス片手に泳いで、夢に向かって走っていた時の事や、
ある日ビッグマツベで水中をやっていたとき、セカンドリーフにいたタコさんが、
その沖でブレイクする波を見て、イシマル君とタニウチタロウを連れ立って
沖へパドルしていき、ショットガンを発見、その凄まじいブレイクを真横で見て、
まるでドキュ〜ン、あれだ、ショットガンみたいだな、と言われた事から、
ショットガンの名前の由来が来た事。
その後、ショットガンが立ちそうな台風のコースを取ると、
ある時は湘南から、ある時は沖縄からでも足繁く通い、
今とは違って原始のパドルで、
タコさんやイシマル君等とショットガンセッションを展開してきた。
そんな歴史の中でも、あの台風イオキの時が一番凄かったのが鮮明に脳裏に焼き付いている。
この頃からジェットアシストを意識し始め、撮影する側にとっても、
サーファーの安全面から言ってもジェットがあればいいね、という時代になってきた。
イオキの時はNPO／ライフセイビングのチームがボランティアで2台ジェットを出して下さり、
あの狂気とも言えるイオキセッションで事故を起こさずやり切る事が出来たが、
あの時に来た最後の最後のモンスターセットで全員が総喰らいし、
ある者はリーシュが引きちぎれ、ある者は板が３ピースに折れ、
タコさんは３発真下で喰らい、息が出来なくなり、あの世の一歩手前まで行きそうになり、
カービーはピークのインパクトゾーンにスタックし、
もうあそこが地獄の釜ゆでの図になったことが今も目に焼き付いている。
それからまた５年後にショットガンデイが訪れた時は、
すでにナカツヒロ君のジェットスキーが用意されてあり、
オノゲ等もジェットスキーを持ち、今現在のレスキューチームの原型が出来上がっていた。
つまりいよいよショットガンへの意識が高まり、
本気で皆でこの波を取り組むという時代に突入したのだ。
しかし、相変わらずショットガンの波は手強く、人をサーファーを寄せ付けない、
魔物の様な存在であることには変わらなかった。
そしてそして、最後のショットガン／ザデイからまた５年後の今回のセッション。
大きな収穫はやはり地元勝浦のナカムラショウタがドミネイトして来た事。
確か５年前の時が初めてのショットガンだったはずだが、
今回のセッションへの気迫は半端じゃなかった。
恐らく近い将来ショウタによって、ショットガンの大きな壁がぶち破られる事だろう。
それはまた５年後の事になるか？いや次の台風セッションでなるかもしれない。
今回のショットガンセッションを終え、
タコさんを始めとするショットガン／レギュラークルーからのお願いがあります。
勝浦湾には海上保安庁／コーストガードがあり、
常にサーファーの動向がチェックされています。
だからサーファーとしてのスキルの合った行動をしてもらいたいとのことです。
板の用意もなくただ興味本位だけでは、
絶対にショットガンやアウターリーフにはパドルアウトしないでください。
現在，ナオト／オノゲ／シゲル等で編成されているジェットアシストチームは、
あくまでスキルのあるサーファーをより安全にトラブルなく、
セッションさせるために出動しています。
つまりレスキューという目的の元で、コーストガードにも理解を得ており、
勝浦湾内でのジェットによるトウインは禁止されているとのことです。
ビッグウエイブセッションに於いて、
トラブルなくセッションを高みにもっていけるようにしているのが、
彼等のミッションなのです。
千葉、いや日本が世界に誇る驚愕のビッグウエイブスポット／ショットガン。
これからもどんな凄波が、どんなセッションが展開されていくのだろうか？
自然の恩恵に感謝。
10 days trip to Chiba has finally ended.
When I look back to this trip, it started from that Uluwatu Challenge.
Bali didn’t really pump as well on the wave chart.
But in the same time, I knew that huge typhoon was going toward Japan.
So I changed my flight to August 18th.
(Thanks to Tomoko-san for your help!!)
By looking at the typhoon’s course, I decided to go to Shot Gun, Chiba.
Landed to Kansai Airport on August 18th and got to Chiba, Shot Gun on the 20th.
But typhoon swell wasn’t here yet.
Picked up Kohl Christensen from Patagonia and
checked into Kakui Guest House in Matsube, Katsuura.
I was deadly tired from last night’s all night drive so crushed down in the bed.
Next day, typhoon swell started to fill in.
Beach was starting to get closed out from yesterday but
the grand swell finally reached to Katsuura.
Condition was smooth and lovely so we started to do a session at a small Shot Gun.
Shot Gun is placed in middle of Katsuura Bay and breaks in this bank called the Nakane.
Wave hits the shallow bank from a deep water and
becomes one of the craziest fearsome Japanese big wave spot.
Wave was 6 ft in the beginning but evolved to 8~10 ft.
This is what we call the real Shot Gun. People say that The Day appears only once in 5 years.
True Shot Gun appears only when typhoon gets powerful enough and gets really close to
Boso Peninsula.
Tide was low on our morning session so
double up peak showed up but swell’s push wasn’t strong enough so
we looked forward for the high tide session on afternoon.
We were pretty exhausted by this long morning session but
forecast was saying that tomorrow’s condition will be south west onshore so
Tako-san, pioneer of the Shot Gun said
“We’ll never know about tomorrow so let’s go for another round!!”
And we prepared for the evening session.
As we thought, size rose up and tide was high enough to make the waves smooth.
Wind was weak onshore but waves were big so made the surfer easier to take off
than off shore condition.
We surfed for 3 rounds including this day’s 2 round and 23rd’s round but
this evening session was the most ridable session in these 3 rounds.
After a lovely sunset showed up, Naoto, Onoge, Shigeru, who assisted us by their jet ski
delivered us to the port and stoked about today’s 2 rounds.
Typhoon swell reached here earlier than I thought so
I was glad about getting hear on time by hasten my flight from Bali.
Next morning, swell has grown up but as the forecast told us, condition was south west onshore~~
And we went to Mikazuki Hotel to catch up with Mark Healy.
Healy was in Japan for his journal job about shark diving.
He was diving with sharks till yesterday but it is pretty much impossible to dive by this typhoon
so came up to Sotobo, Chiba to surf some big waves.
But onshore never got weak so we cruised around and
prepared for tomorrow.
And the biggest day, August 23rd.
Swell’s line is thick and huge. It was totally different from yesterday.
North east wind from the typhoon got stronger and Shot Gun started to get rougher.
Talo-san knew wind will get stronger so paddled out earlier and
everyone started to paddled to the Shot Gun’s peak as well.
When we got out, there was already few surfers on the line-up.
Specially, Shota Nakamura’s aura was different from others.
His stance of trying to catch that monster barrel was just almost dreadful.
Even these waves were untouchable for Kohl & Healey.
These made us know how difficult Shot Gun is.
On late morning, wind became side shore,
current got stronger and condition became more hard so
we were forced to retreat.
When we got back to the guest house,
Kohl & Healy looked depressed because they couldn’t catch waves.
Because of many difficult situation in this spot, these made Shot Gun a untouchable
spot for them. We were just watching Shot Gun from the restaurant.
Kakui Guest House is like the place where I started my life as a photographer.
35 years ago, I was still 20. I wanted to shoot surfing pictures so
I stayed in this guest house with my moped during the winter.
I was still a kid but worked with Kakui’s scary but kind grandma, Shin-san, his wife and
Wakan-san and swam with my Nikonos. I was just running forward for my dream.
One day, I was shooting in the water and Tako-san found this one break breaking in outside.
So he took Ishikaru & Taro Taniuchi to that break and found that legendary Shot Gun.
By seeing from the side, this break was so dynamic that it game a huge impact like a shot gun.
That’s how the name Shot Gun came.
After this historical event, I visited this place when typhoon was in right position and
had a wonderful session with Tako-san, Ishimaru & etc…
There was many legendary session in Shot Gun but the session with Ioki gave me a huge impact.
During that time, we started to think about jet assist get an extra safety for the surfers.
In that time, Life Saving Team/ NPO sailed 2 jet skis for us so
no one lost their life but there was this one massive monster set and
everyone there ate that set. Some lost their board, some broke their board into pieces and
Tako-san ate 3 waves in a row and almost killed him.
Kirby was stucked in the impact zone and
the place was just like hell.
After 5 years, Hiro Nakatsu & Onoge bought a jet ski and thats how the rescue team right now
was born. That also means everyone’s passion to Shot Gun got heated up and
challenged to the Shot Gun together in one piece.
But Shot Gun’s waves were still untouchable.
That place was just like a monster that no one could get near it.
And after 5 years from that, I mean this session we have done.
Shota Nakamura started to dominate.
His first session in Shot Gun was 5 years ago but
his aura was just insane.
In near future, I’m sure that Shota will break this huge wall to the Shot Gun.
That might be 5 years later or the next typhoon swell.
Tako-san & regulär crues has an favor.
There is a coast guard in Katsuura Bay and
they are checking over surfers all the time.
So they want surfers make an action that fits your skills.
Please do not paddle out with just your curiosity.
Naoto, Onoge and Shigeru, the jet assist team is there to
give extra safety for the skilled surfers.
We have permission from the coast guard about this jet assist and
tow-in is prohibited in Katsuura Bay.
Their mission is to have a safe session in a big wave condition.
I wonder what kind of wonderful session is coming up in this one of
the best big wave spot in the World, Shot Gun.
