Soulmanのウラナミ『Commitment to Excellence』

Soulman:"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." --Benjamin Franklin

“Commitment to Excellence”とは、 “Vince Lombardi”という有名なNFLアメフトのコーチが言ったことの一部で、“The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.”

Howzit…Howzit…Spring is here and it is getting warmer but my spring fever hasn’t arrived yet. Every year around this time I start to get excited because soon I don’t have to wear so many layers of clothes and can go back to wearing just shorts and a t-shirt. Maybe because I still want to snowboard a bit longer.

The days of heavy snow this year were perfect to put a layer on the road in front of my house. This road has a prefect incline to snowboard down it and I waited 12 years for the perfect time. But I was stopped in fear that I wasn’t setting a good example for the kids in the neighborhood.

Anyway, I just returned from a snowboard trip with my boys, it was their first time. It was motivating to see them try hard, going from not being able to stand, to racing each other. Watching them, trying to better themselves on every run, not worrying about falling, nor how they looked to other people was inspiring. They were focused on just getting better and everything else didn’t matter.

Society pressures us to be winners, win a contest, hold a high position, or have high status. This tends to force us to conform to how people want us to be, instead of how we want to be. Lately I have fallen into this mentality and forgot about a lesson on the “Commitment to Excellence” that I was taught years ago.

This lesson is from a famous American Football coach named, “Vince Lombardi.” His quote is: “The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.” One example he used is that in a football game or any competition, the score is just for the spectators and media. Even if the game is won, if you did not beat the man in front of you or do your best…you didn’t win. And you need to keep on trying until you are satisfied…If you always try your best to achieve excellence then the quality of your life will be reflected. As with all sayings and motivational thoughts, I understand the concept but “doing it!” is the hard part….Ganbarimasu!!!

Anyway, Spring is here, good time to out of the city go catch a wave and most of all…don’t forget to support your local surf/ocean activity shop. Until next time…”A hui hou…Malama Pono!!!
